On Aug. 23, Joseph H. LaCaze, drummer for New Orleans sludge legends Eyehategod, passed away. The underground metal community has been mourning the loss of LaCaze ever since, and the cause of the drummer's death has now been made public.

Joey LaCaze was memorialized by Lamb of God's Randy Blythe, Shadows Fall's Brian Fair, Pelican, Nonpoint + many other acts, musicians and fans shortly after the news of LaCaze's passing began to circulate. Various news sources wrote that cancer may have been the cause of LaCaze's death, but according to a new press release, this is not the case. Instead, respiratory failure was confirmed to be the reason LaCaze passed.

The official press release on Joey LaCaze's passing reads:

Joseph M. LaCaze, New Orleans native and drummer for EyeHateGod, Mystick Krewe of Clearlight and Outlaw Order, passed away on August 23rd in New Orleans after a very successful five-week UK and European tour with EyeHateGod. He also performed ceremonial voodoo drumming in numerous solo experimental electronics projects. Doctors confirmed to family members that the cause of death was respiratory failure. He also suffered from long term asthma.
