The calliope was patented by Joshua C. Stoddard of Worcester, MA on this day in 1855. The Calliope is that steam driven musical instrument used in traditional circuses. When the instrument got up a full head of steam, it could produce 135 decibels of sound! That's more than the sound of a jet plane taking off.
