Radio icon Casey Kasem has passed away at the age of 82. The DJ, best known for his ‘American Top 40′ countdown show and a variety of spinoffs, died early Sunday morning (June 15) after suffering from advanced Parkinson’s Disease and dementia.

For many, Kasem was a window into the music world for a generation of music lovers, as he counted down the top tracks in the land and reached many with his Long Distance Dedications. He hosted the show from 1970 through 2004, when Ryan Seacrest was named the new host of the program.

Kasem had been hospitalized in Washington state since June 1, and his care had been the subject of much press in recent months as his children and wife Jean took their dispute to court.

Kerri Kasem, Casey’s daughter and former co-host of ‘Sixx Sense,’ revealed Kasem’s death in a Facebook post that can be read below:

In addition to his radio work, Kasem was well known for his voiceovers, most famously voicing the character of Shaggy on ‘Scooby-Doo’ for years. He also served as the voice of Robin on ‘Super Friends.’

Kasem served as a disc jockey while in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and eventually began his professional radio career in the ’50s. And for his work, he was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1985.

Actor Ken Howard, president of SAG-AFTRA, stated, “For many, the multi-talented Casey Kasem was the voice of popular music, and his long-running countdown program brought exposure for many of his fellow union members. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends and may we all remember him best by ‘reaching for the stars.'”

Motley Crue‘s Nikki Sixx, who co-hosted ‘Sixx Sense’ with Kasem’s daughter Kerri, tweeted, “RIP Casey Kasem, who inspired all of us in radio and turned millions of people onto music. Sending love to Kerri Kasem, family and friends.”
