‘Captain America 3′ Set for 2016 Release, Will Go Head-to-Head With ‘Batman vs. Superman’

Captain America 3 May 2016

The mystery has been solved! Not long ago, Marvel Studios set a May 2016 release date for an untitled Marvel movie, which recently became a hot topic as ‘Batman vs. Superman‘ rescheduled to open on the same date. Now, after much speculation, the identity of the mystery Marvel film has been revealed to be ‘Captain America 3,’ which directors Joe and Anthony Russo are already actively developing.

The Russo brothers directed ‘Captain America 2‘ (officially titled ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’), which is currently set for release on this coming April 4, but Marvel was so impressed with their work that the studio enlisted them early on to start development on ‘Captain America 3.’ As first revealed by THR and now formerly announced by Marvel, the third installment of the Chris Evans-led film series has been slated for the May 6, 2016 release spot.

In addition, the highly anticipated ‘Man of Steel‘ follow-up, the still unofficially titled ‘Batman vs. Superman,’ with Henry Cavill‘s Superman, Ben Affleck‘s Batman, Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman and Jesse Eisenberg‘s Lex Luthor was also recently slated for the exact same release date. Since Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige threw down his gauntlet in saying they have no plans to budge, that weekend is looking to be the clash of the titans — literally — considering the long competition between Marvel and DC Comics. However, the latest rumor is that Warner Bros. is already planning on moving out of that slot, which makes sense as this is one battle to stay away from.

As previously reported, ‘Guardians the Galaxy 2‘ was originally thought to be released on May 6, though Marvel has set an additional 2016 premiere spot for July 8, in which the sequel to James Gunn‘s highly anticipated superhero space opera could fit. Also on the Marvel docket is the ‘Doctor Strange‘ movie, which Marvel recently described as being a mix of ‘The Matrix,’ Hayao Miyazaki and Stanley Kubrick, and is currently on the look out for directors.

While no casting for ‘Captain America 3′ has been officially revealed, Chris Evans’ current six-film contract with Marvel locks him in for at least ‘The Avengers 2‘ and another Cap movie, while Anthony Mackie (The Falcon) said we’ll get to see more of his character in coming films and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier) said that he believes his deal includes nine films.
