‘Jurassic World 2’ Director Compares His Film to ‘The Empire Strikes Back’
Earlier this year, our own Britt Hayes wrote a brief history of the times when modern filmmakers compared their movies to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. It was a pretty revealing trend; as movie studios scrambled to give audiences the dark and gritty franchises they assumed audiences wanted, more and more filmmakers used Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises as a kind of fanboy secret handshake.
Stan Lee Reveals His Next Three Marvel Cameos
The fact that Stan Lee is guaranteed to appear in nearly every single Marvel movie is one of those small little charms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that I hope never goes away. Sure, some people probably view it as an annoying break in the fourth wall, but it also reminds audiences that we are watching a superhero comic book movie. These movies don’t need to choose between being cartoonish and deadly serious; they can be both, often at the same time, and Stan Lee always helps drive that point home.
Here’s Your First Look at the Empire Magazine ‘Rogue One’ Photos
Good things come to those who wait; that’s what my mother used to say, anyways. Odds are she was just being polite and not thinking about the first standalone Star Wars movie, but it’s a sentiment that certainly applies here. We spent time waiting for the first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story teaser trailer, and then the first and second theatrical trailers, and then we were waiting for Empire Magazine to launch its October issue that has several new images from the movie. It would seem that life as a Star Wars fan is made up of waiting.
The ‘Suicide Squad’ End Credits and VFX Reel Are Now Online
There may not be a lot of common ground between fans and critics of Suicide Squad, but one thing we can all agree on is the quality of the closing credits. Those swirling patterns of color and character icons that played behind the names of the crew were probably more colorful and fun than the entire last 45 minutes of the movie combined. So all of us — fans and critics alike — should be pretty excited that production company Buddha Jones has uploaded both the film’s final credits and a VFX reel to their Vimeo page.
New ‘Rogue One’ Trailer to Premiere During Olympics on Thursday
If the prospect of watching thousands of athletes from over 200 countries compete for sporting immortality wasn’t enough to get you watching, there is now another reason for you to turn on the Olympics this week. According to a short teaser that ran during today’s events, NBC will be airing a brand new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as part of their Thursday night lineup. Here is one of the teasers (via Heroic Hollywood).
Milla Jovovich Teases First ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’ Trailer
Some day, we’re going to look back at the career of Milla Jovovich and realize she was one of our more underappreciated action stars. While we spend our time arguing with Twitter eggs about representation in movies like Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters, Jovovich and her husband-director Paul W.S. Anderson have just been over in their own little corner of Hollywood, churning out modestly budgeted pulp action movies with a strong female lead. The upcoming Resident Evil release will be the sixth film in the franchise. Six!
Dwayne Johnson Offers Us a Behind the Scenes Look at ‘Fast 8’
Few movie stars understand the power of social media quite as well as Dwayne Johnson. Whether he’s using his Instagram account to announce upcoming projects or putting together a teaser trailer for a brand new YouTube channel, the artist formerly known as The Rock takes every chance he can to connect with his fans and give them a chance to see what life is like for one of Hollywood’s most in-demand movie stars.
James Cameron Weighs In on the ‘Alien 5’ Screenplay
While many people stood in line for Marvel’s big announcements at Comic-Con International , other science-fiction fans were being treated to a panel discussion on the 30th anniversary of Aliens. Director James Cameron and his cast and crew talked about the experience of making the original film, but those also interested in the future of the franchise were treated to Cameron’s first impression of the oft-delayed Neill Blomkamp Alien 5.
Mel Gibson Shoots Everyone but His Daughter in ‘Blood Father’ Trailer
Mel Gibson has spent the majority of his career playing variations of the same slightly unhinged character, so it was probably inevitable — even despite his well-deserved years in the Hollywood penalty box — that some producer would find occasion to cast him as a slightly unhinged dad. The new trailer for Blood Father shows Gibson ranting and raving as per usual, only this time he has an estranged daughter on the run to protect and a survivalist beard. The latter certainly seems like an upgrade.
Production has Started on Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’
Ready Player One was always meant to be a movie. With a plot that centers on millenial nostalgia for early ’90s video games, movies, and television shows, and a thoroughly likable group of characters, Ready Player One has been on many science-fiction fans’ most anticipated movie list since the movie rights were optioned. And on Friday, screenwriter Zak Penn posted on Twitter that production on the Steven Spielberg-led film adaptation had finally begun.
