‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Premiere Preview: Will “The Magical Place” Finally Provide Coulson Answers?
The lukewarm reception of Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ has all but burned through excuses by the time of tonight’s 2014 premiere, “The Magical Place.” So while the team looks to rescue Coulson from Centipede, who in turn press the agent for answers on his mysterious resurrection, will the ‘Avengers‘-adjacent series finally deliver on its promise? Clark Gregg lets us know if the real truth will come out in “The Magical Place”!
Whether by Vision, Life Model Decoy, magic or a trip to the actual Tahiti, it seems as if the oft-debated Marvel series tying into its cinematic universe may finally deliver at least some explanation as to how its lead character returned from the injury of having Loki’s scepter rammed through his chest in the events of ‘The Avengers.’ Speaking to both TVGuide and Entertainment Weekly, series star Clark Gregg gushed about the payoff provided in tonight’s 2014 premiere, “The Magical Place,” which supposedly ties together its many threads toward a singular story:
People have been really patient. Phil Coulson’s been really patient. I might add Clark Gregg’s been damn patient. [Laughs] I had a lot of mysterious stuff spelled out for me when I was told about this job. I loved the basic premise that played out in the pilot that he has a comparatively innocuous story that he believes about this near-miss that he experienced, dead-for-eight-seconds version…
[It’s] something that’s not just some secret medical practice but something that’s mysterious, big enough, dark enough, and integral enough to the plans of the nefarious Centipede organization that they pulled a swap and let Mike Peterson go in order to kidnap Agent Coulson to find out what really happened in “Tahiti.” It seems like standalone episodes are all being fused together and it’s all becoming part of this broader fabric that’s really all connected, and it’s also exciting to me because I just think episode 111 puts him in the hands of people with all kinds of technology and terrifying powers who are ironically bent on the same thing that he has wanted…
Gregg stopped short of admitting that we’d meet or find out more about the “Clairvoyant” that had been alluded to over the course of the series, but still continually invoked the name in interviews, specifically that the figure wishes to understand why Coulson’s return could have eluded him.
We’ll hopefully have a broader sense of where ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is headed by the end of tonight’s “The Magical Place,” but in the meantime, what say you? Could tonight’s premiere finally set the series on track, or are we in for more disappointment? Watch a clip below, and give us your predictions in the comments!
