ABC Orders Additional Episodes of ‘The Goldbergs,’ ‘Trophy Wife’ and ‘Super Fun Night,’ Cancels ‘Back in the Game’
Among the final broadcast networks to decide the fates of its fall 2013 offerings, ABC has good news for most of its newest sitcoms. The ‘Wonder Years’-esque ‘The Goldbergs’ and Malin Akerman‘s ‘Trophy Wife’ have been given full season orders, while Rebel Wilson‘s critically-panned ‘Super Fun Night‘ has been given additional episodes as well, and James Caan’s ‘Back in the Game’ has struck out altogether.
Both ‘The Goldbergs’ and ‘Trophy Wife’ have earned a decent enough buzz, with the former averaging 7.5 million viewers and a 2.7 rating in adults 18-49, while the latter pulls in 5.7 million viewers and a 1.9 rating. ‘Goldbergs’ boasts among its cast Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin and Patton Oswalt in voiceover, while ‘Trophy Wife’ features ‘The West Wing”s Bradley Whitford and ‘The Newsroom”s Marcia Gay Harden.
As for ‘Super Fun Night,’ criticisms of wasting Rebel Wilson’s talents haven’t stopped the series from earning 7.4 million viewers and a 2.8 rating, though ABC only granted the production an additional order of four episodes beyond its initial 13 episode commitment, rather than the usual “back nine.” The baseball-centric ‘Back in the Game’ still manages to bring in 7.3 million viewers and a 2.1 rating, far higher than what you might see on NBC’s most popular comedies, though ABC will scrap the series after its 13-episode run.
What say you? Which of ABC’s new fall comedies do you most think deserved additional episodes or cancellation?
