2013 World Series Recap — Red Sox Beat Cardinals, 6-1, To Win Third Title in 10 Years

Shane Victorino had two hits and four runs batted in, and the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-1, in Boston on Wednesday night to win their third World Series in 10 years. Boston scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings en route to clinching their first world championship at home since 1918.

Victorino laced a three-run double off St. Louis starter Michael Wacha in the third inning, and Stephen Drew led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run.

After Drew’s homer, David Ross struck out before Jacoby Ellsbury doubled. he then advanced to third on Dustin Pedroia’s fly ball to right. Series MVP David Ortiz was then intentionally walked, and Wacha was lifted for Lance Lynn. The Cards reliever gave up a run-scoring single to Mike Napoli that broke the game open.

St. Louis threatened in the top of the seventh inning when Carlos Beltran rapped a two-out single scoring Daniel Descalso and moving Matt Carpenter to third base. Red Sox starter John Lackey then walked Matt Holliday before reliever Junichi Tazawa was called in to extinguish the threat by getting Allen Craig to ground out to first base.

Boston closer Koji Uehara struck out Matt Carpenter for the final out in the ninth.

Throughout the later innings, fans gathered around 101 year-old Fenway Park in anticipation of joining in the celebration with the sold-out crowd. The Boston Police Department had enacted precautionary measures before the game to address the threat of unruly behavior.
